— Wim Catrysse
Wim Catrysse (b. 1973) lives and works in Antwerp.
Since the late 1990s, Catrysse has engaged in a rigorous exploration of the boundaries of visual constructions within his video works. These works are rooted in both self-designed spatial installations and the geological and topographical features of landscape sites. His artistic practice constitutes a continuous dialogue between the conceptual and the tactile, the rational and the instinctive.
Catrysse's cinematographic works are multilayered explorations that center on the unveiling and tension of elemental forces. The images confront the viewer with an underlying threat and disconcerting intensity that sharpen the limits of our sensory perception. Something ominous lingers, undermining our familiar interpretative frameworks and compelling us to relinquish control over our most instinctive observations.
The particularity of Catrysse's method lies in the intriguing interplay between raw impulsivity, physical directness, and the refined process of artistic and technical reasoning. This tension often culminates in carefully thought-out cinematic constructions that not only exert a direct physical impact on the viewer's body but also challenge him to unravel the complexity of the images and critically reconsider his perception.
Catrysse's work has been exhibited in numerous international group exhibitions and solo presentations and is part of the programs of prestigious institutions such as: S.M.A.K., Ghent; Ruhrtriennale, Essen; Kunstmuseum Bonn; Jeu de Paume, Paris; MuHKA, Antwerp; CCA, Tel Aviv; Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen; Arts Santa Mònica, Barcelona; Extra City, Antwerp; HKW, Berlin; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam; and MACRO, Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome.
