Outpost zooms in on the grim reality of an isolated society of miners in Barentsburg, the northernmost settlement of Russia, located in the polar landscape of Svalbard. In recent years, the mining activities became less and less profitable. But, because of the geopolitical and strategic importance of the Arctic archipelago, Russia is keen to maintain its presence. Although Catrysse strays away from explicit statements on the greater political context, the viewer can not but notice a state of denial. A dark perspective on a society which seems to have reached a terminal industrial stage, heading towards total exhaustion.
